​Abut the penguins
African Penguins used to be known as jackass penguins because of their distinctive braying, and they’re the only penguins found on the continent. Colonies can be found from southern Namibia all the way around the South African coast to Port Elizabeth, but few places offer as remarkable a viewing point as Boulders Beach.In 1910, it was estimated that there were approximately one-and-a-half million African Penguins; a century later, the aquatic bird was classified as an endangered species. By 1982 there were only two breeding pairs remaining. Incredible conservation efforts have grown the Boulders colony to over 3,000 birds in recent years. 
 
Mit kell tudni róluk?
Körülbelül 2 éve szereztem tudomást a Boulders Beachről, ahol az Afrikai pingvinek egyedül élnek. Ez az egyetlen pingvinfaj Afrikában, amit a kipusztulás fenyegetett nem is olyan rég. 1982-re már csak két pár pingvin maradt, ami nagyrészt annak tudható be, hogy a lakosok megették a tojásaikat. Az elmúlt közel 40 évben sikerült ezt a számot 3000-ra emelni. 
A pingvinek megtalálhatók Namíbiától Port Elizabeth-ig, de csak néhány ilyen különleges hely van, mint a Boulders Beach! 

​How to get there? 
Boulder beach located roughly 75 km from Cape Town. The easiest way to go there is by car. However, if you don’t feel the courage in yourself to rent one, you can go with an organized trip or by public transportation.

Hogyan juss el oda? 
A Boulders Beach Fokvárostól körülbelül 75 km-re található. Legegyszerűbb autóval menni, azonban vannak szervezett kirándulások Fokvárosból illetve tömegközlekedéssel is el lehet jutni a közeli városba. 
 
When to go there?
The best time to visit Cape Town is from December until March. This is the summer in South Africa and the penguins breeding this time of the year. During summer lot more penguins are on the coast, than in September, when the babies are big enough and spend most of their time in the water fishing. Of course, summer is their peak season and it means there is more tourist than other months of the year but it also means more penguins. 
The Boulder Beach has two part, one is only for the penguins and the other sandy beach for the tourist to swim and enjoy the water. At the penguin beach, you are not allowed to swim. You can only observe them from the path. 30 meters away is the little sandy beach for you to swim if you would like to. Summertime the weather and the water are warmer- and most importantly this time of the year lot more penguins want to come over to this beach and swim with the tourists. Don’t feed them, don’t chase or touch them just sit and watch them in their natural habitat. 
Sadly, when we were there in September no penguin wanted to come over and swim with me. 
The beach is open from 8 am in the morning,​ ​so if you would like to avoid the crowd arrive early morning or later afternoon, before closing. 
If you would like to swim with the penguins, then come summer early morning- but keep it in mind, it's not 100% that you can swim with penguins!
 
Mikor érdemes menni? 
A legjobb időszak Fokvárosba utazásra Decembertől Márciusig, ekkor van nekik nyár és ekkor költik ki a pingvinek a tojásaikat. 
Ilyenkor több pingvin látható a a parton, mint Július és Szeptember között, mert akkor már a fiókák nagyok, és napközben sokat halásznak a vízben. 
Mivel náluk a mi telünk a főszezon ezért értelemszerűen ilyen sokkal több a turista. 
Előnye azonban a főszezonnak, hogy a sok pingvin jobban szétoszlik. A Boulder Beach két részből áll- egy homokos sziklás tengerpartból és egy kis útból, ami átvisz a pingvinek fő tartózkodási helyére. Ezen a helyen nem lehet fürdeni és alacsony falú kerítéssel el is van zárva. A 30 méterre odébb lévő homokos strand azonban fürdőzők kedvence. Télen remek az idő a fürdőzésre, melegebb a víz és ami a lényeg- ilyenkor sokkal több a pingvin akik átúszkálnak a megszokott helyükről a homokos strandra. Nem szabad őket etetni, megfogni, kergetni, ha szerencséd van, akkor a közeledbe totyognak. 
Sajnos most Szeptemberben kevesebb pingvin volt a parton, így egyik sem érzett késztetést, hogy átsétáljon a fürdőzésre kijelölt partra. 
A Beach reggel 8kornyit, így a tömeg elkerülése érdekébe jobb reggel érkezni vagy zárás előtt egy órával. 
Ha szeretnél a pingvinekkel fürdeni, mindenképp a téli időszakot célozd és érkezz kora reggel-azonban ez sem garancia arra, hogy lesz-e pingvin a strandolásra kijelölt partszakaszon!

What else can you do?
Cape of Good Hope located about 30 mins away from the Boulders beach by car. Despite the misconception, this is not the southern point of Africa, but the two oceans meet here.
Also very close to the beach located Simon’s Town. From here you can go to a whale watching or Shark watching tour and if you are brave enough, you can dive with the great white shark too!
 
Mivel kösd össze a programot?
A pingvines tengerparttól körülbelül fél órás autóútra található a Jóreménység foka, ami a hiedelemmel ellentétben nem Afrika legdélebbi pontja! A közeli városból Simon’s Townból van lehetőség cápa és bálna lesre, valamint aki elég bátornak érzi magát, az ketrecben lemerülhet fehércápák közé!
